Kirkus Indie Calls The Unfrozen Few “An Empathetic and Layered Meditation on Illness and Time”
Randy Boyd’s first novel in 21 years earns early critical praise.
Kirkus Indie reviewed Randy Boyd’s The Unfrozen Few, Book One: Welcome to the Future, calling the action “fast-paced” and the novel “an empathetic and layered meditation on illness and time.” The story follows a group of AIDS patients who wake up in present-day America after being cryogenically frozen in the 1980s. Founded in 1933, Kirkus Reviews describes itself as the nation’s leading prepublication journal of book reviews.
Kirkus adds that “Boyd has full control of his extensive cast, granting each of the characters complexity as they form alliances within their ‘Emergence,’” and that “through the group’s conversations, the author introduces complex themes related to living with HIV and AIDS, including survivor’s guilt, positionality in the LGBTQ+ community, and fluid sexual identities, in a carefully considered way.”
“Receiving a positive review from Kirkus, one of the country’s oldest and most respected review publications, is a great honor,” Boyd said. “It’s especially gratifying to see a story about people living with AIDS appreciated for its humanity and given the recognition it deserves.”
