Randy Boyd Reunites with Eric Marcus on Making Gay History to Talk The Unfrozen Few

Twenty-five years to the day after their first recorded conversation, the oral historian checks back in.

Eric Marcus, founder and host of the Making Gay History podcast, interviewed Randy Boyd about The Unfrozen Few, Book One: Welcome to the Future for the podcast’s Patreon channel. The story follows a group of AIDS patients who wake up in present-day America after being cryogenically frozen in the 1980s.

The first interview took place on February 19, 2001, before Making Gay History existed; that recording became an episode of the podcast in 2022 and was rebroadcast on San Francisco radio station KALW’s Queer Power Hour in 2023. Launched in 2016, the podcast draws on Marcus’s archive of oral history interviews with LGBTQ pioneers. It received the Oral History Association’s 2017 award for oral history in a nonprint format, and The Atlantic named its Stonewall 50 season one of the best podcasts of 2019.

“It’s deeply gratifying to know that my work and my story are considered part of gay history,” Boyd said. “What Eric is doing—preserving these voices and making sure our stories aren’t lost—is both admirable and necessary. I’m proud to be part of it.”
