The Unfrozen Few, Book One: Welcome to the Future was released February 11, 2026. It is Randy Boyd’s fifth novel and his first since Walt Loves the Bearcat in 2005, a Lambda Literary Award finalist for Best Romance.
So why this book, and why now?
“I had to write it,” Boyd said. “I needed to say something about this modern world, from the point of view of someone who endured what was really a war — the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s.”
Boyd acquired the virus in 1985, when he was twenty-three.
“The stigma lives on,” he said. “There are a lot of crazy ways the world changed because of HIV and most people don’t even know it. To me, it’s a mindfuck.”
That tension runs through the novel. At the center of The Unfrozen Few is Dr. Nathan Black, a 30-year-old Black gay physician and member of the family behind the biotech company responsible for the cryogenic experiment. Nathan and the other patients learn that the world assumed they died long ago.
“They have that in common with many long-term survivors like myself,” Boyd said.
