Seattle Gay News and Stonewall News Northwest Call The Unfrozen Few “Bold and Imaginative”

Reviewer Frank Gaimari praises Randy Boyd’s novel as “thought-provoking and deeply human.”

In a review published in both Seattle Gay News and Stonewall News Northwest, Frank Gaimari calls Randy Boyd’s The Unfrozen Few, Book One: Welcome to the Future “a bold and imaginative work of speculative fiction that combines a gripping premise with emotional depth.” The story follows a group of AIDS patients who wake up in present-day America after being cryogenically frozen in the 1980s.

Gaimari adds that “what sets The Unfrozen Few apart is its ability to tackle heavy themes with empathy and depth,” and that “Boyd’s exploration of illness, time, and human connection resonates throughout the story, making it as emotionally impactful as it is entertaining.”

Founded in 1974, Seattle Gay News describes itself as the third-oldest LGBTQ+ newspaper in the country. Stonewall News Northwest, founded in Spokane in 1992, covers Eastern Washington and North Idaho, and reviewed Boyd’s second novel, Bridge Across the Ocean, in 2000, calling it “a delicious ode to summer boyhood adventures.”

“You spend years writing a book without knowing how it will land,” Boyd said. “Then a review comes along and reflects back the very things you hoped were there: the humanity, the humor, the heartbreak, the questions underneath it all. There’s no better feeling.”
