The San Francisco area’s Bay Area Reporter, which once gave my novel Walt Loves the Bearcat a fantastic review, is now accusing me of taking on gays and race in my new collection. They’re right! If the homophobic, HIV-and AIDS-phobic, racist shoe fits …
The BAR article by Brian Bromberger coincides with the release of The Essential Randy Boyd, Volume 1, a .99-cents ebook featuring 10 stories, essays, blogposts and book excerpts that best define me.
Brian interviewed me by email and asked some very pointed questions: where do race relations stand in America (with the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King upon us); is it true that gay men — knowing discrimination themselves — are less racists than the general population; and which is hardest, being black, gay, or HIV-positive?
In return, I provided BAR with some very candid answers, including advice for the gay man who might not see himself as racist (but doesn’t date black men); more commentary on Magic Johnson’s big and bittersweet impact on my HIV/AIDS journey; and, oh, yeah, how to deal with Trumpism!
